Restaurant review: AJ's Doolittles ***
Sports bar offers plenty to like
AJ's Doolittles - wasn't he the ace pilot who led the B-25 air raids on Japan during World War II? Or was that Jimmy Doolittle? Wait, didn't he talk to the animals in Doctor Doolittle?
Wrong again. AJ's Doolittles isn't a person, it's a Michigan sports bar and restaurant -with an "s" at the end. The place is, however, named after a person: Arnie Jennings. He owns the place at Secor and Consear roads in Lambertville.
Since 2003, AJ's has been dishing out eclectic fare ranging from stuffed green pepper soup, mini-burger appetizers, and full-sized sandwiches to steaks, chicken dinners, fish and chips, pizzas, and daily Mexican specialties. It's a modestly appointed place with a pretty good menu and reasonable prices.
"Eclectic" also defines the look of AJ's. There's an inviting bar, party room, and large dining room where origami-like mobiles hang from the ceiling. Among the delicate creations are a Canada goose in flight, a big fish, and a gorgeous tall ship with multicolored sails.
Near the entrance is a big stuffed deer standing next to a fake Christmas tree, and on the walls are various sports pictures as well as a neat old movie poster of the Three Stooges dressed as bellboys in a comedy aptly titled Hotel Knucklehead.
